Networks and coverage
Japan has some of the best mobile infrastructure in the world. Travel eSIMs typically connect via SoftBank, Docomo or KDDI, all offering dependable 4G/5G in cities, on the Shinkansen and in most rural areas.
Choosing a plan
Navigation, translation apps and photo uploads add up quickly in Japan — most travelers use 700MB to 1GB per day. If you plan to stream or hotspot a laptop, choose an unlimited daily plan.
Installation tips
Install the eSIM before you fly while you have reliable Wi-Fi. Enable Data Roaming for the eSIM line after landing (this is required for travel eSIMs and does not incur roaming fees on your plan).
Good to know
Free Wi-Fi in Japan is less common than travelers expect. An eSIM with a solid data allowance is the most reliable way to use IC-card apps, maps and train timetables on the go.
